Help/FAQ

Q - What are Groups, are they like Facebook groups?

A - No they are much more, they are aimed at projects and you can have your own web pages, blog, forums, newsletters and local classified ads. Just like having your own website for free.

Q - What is the criteria concerning Classified Ad content

A - Only adverts that relate to the content and aspirations of Autonopedia are permitted. That is anything to do with sustainable living, community, alternative lifestyles and outlook etc., or anything that common sense would suggest that would be of interest to users of this site.

Anything to do with prostitution, pharmaceuticals (inc. viagra etc.) and all of the usual unwanted un-related forms of adverts will be deleted if posted.

People who are properly selling or providing services and products etc.,are perfectly welcome to advertise as long as it is some way related to the ethics of Autonopedia. Advertising an apartment in a city towerblock would not be appropriate but a cottage with a smallholding would. Advertising motor vehicles are generally not appropriate although a motor home kitted out for low-impact living may be.

Common sense should guide potential advertisers as to whether their advert is appropriate and if we do consider otherwise the advertiser will be informed of our decision.

Q - If Autonopedia is not for profit then why are there adverts?

A - It costs money and a lot of time to run Autonopedia and to remain viable and sustainable it must have some sort of income if only to cover hosting fees etc. if possible it would be good to pay for such things as copywriting, research and development and invest into worthwhile projects that would not be able to happen without some funding. As it is, at the time of writing, Autonopedia is in dept and it is hoped that this may soon be rectified. This is also why we have a donations button.

Q - Autonopedia is not a wiki, surely that would make it easier for people to contribute?

A - No, Autonopedia is not a wiki for good reason. A wiki is very open to abuse and requires a lot of moderation, a large part of Wikipedia's multi-million dollar budget goes to pay the moderators and the office space reqired to house them. In it's current format, contributers can email material for inclusion and it can be edited and formatted to be suitable for a wide range of readers, saving the need for proof reading and arranging by the contributor.

Q - Why do I need to sign up? I am fed up with websites that want me to register and sign up.

A - All of the content is freely available without having to do so. You only need to sign up if you want to contribute to the forums, make comments, start a group or place an advert. If you didn't have to, the site would rapidly become full of spam and would become un-useable.

Q - What is the point of Autonopedia when we have Wikipedia?

A - Autonopedia concentrates on practical applications for sustainable living and small communities. Wikipedia has very little if anything practical covering the areas that Autonopedia does. Autonopedia is also designed to be a rallying point for those who are interested in sustainable living, allowing like-minded people to interact with each other in a way that Wikipedia and even Facebook never can.
